Rangitāiki River Scheme Review

Rangitāiki River Scheme Review

Tuesday, 19 September 2017 - The Rangitāiki River Scheme Review panel has completed the report into the infrastructure and the circumstances that led to the breach of a flood wall and associated flooding through the town of Edgecumbe on 6 April 2017.

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council commissioned the Review, led by Sir Michael Cullen in the days after the event, requesting the report be completed in July. Due to the volume and technical nature of the information received, the Review panel required additional time to process this information.

As appropriate, the report is a highly technical and complex document to enable Council engineers to identify what may be required in future approaches to the management of Rivers and Drainage schemes.

Associated with this, are the procedural requirements for Council to now consider this independent report. This process is as outlined within the Terms of Reference which state ‘BOPRC may receive and consider the outputs of the review in confidence, prior to their public release, to enable it to prepare and provide an initial response to the Panel’s findings and recommendations’.

There will be no information released in relation to this Review, nor comments made by either the independent panel members or Council during this phase of due consideration.

We will issue a further media advisory once we have confirmed the time-frame required and therefore the dates of public release.
