Update – fatal crash near Kaitaia
Police cordons have now been lifted at the scene of a fatal crash in Awanui, just north of Kaitaia this morning.
Three pedestrians were struck by a vehicle and a man has died at the scene.
Another man has received serious injuries and has been airlifted to Whangarei hospital, and one woman has been taken to Kaitaia hospital with moderate injuries.
The crash occurred at the intersection of State Highway 1 and Quarry Road, Awanui at approximately 1.15am this morning. The scene has been blessed by local kaumätua.
Police are speaking to the driver of the vehicle and the serious crash unit are investigating.
