Work Begins on Woolston Community Hub

Work Begins on Woolston Community Hub

A sod-turning ceremony to mark the start of construction on the Woolston community hub is taking place at 1pm on Monday 27 November.

The new building will return community facilities to the heart of Woolston village, with the design echoing the distinctive brick of the former Woolston Community Library that once occupied the site. It will include the volunteer library, a small meeting room, a hall for community groups to use, and a public toilet. The new facility is scheduled to open in mid-2018.

There have been two rounds of public consultation seeking comments about what should be included in the building, how community groups want to use it, and a preference of materials for the exterior.

The Woolston Community Library was one of the first suburban libraries to open in Christchurch in 1871, and was badly damaged in the Christchurch earthquakes of 2010 and 2011.
