Child car seat recycling programme introduced

Dec 14 2017

Child car seat recycling programme introduced to Palmerston North

Nationwide recycling programme SeatSmart will be operating from Palmerston North City Council’s Ferguson Street Recycling Centre for a one year trial from Saturday 13 January.

Residents can drop-off their expired or damaged child car seats to the Recycling Centre at a subsidised cost of $5.

“Child car seats are bulky and not easily compactable,” says Samantha Battman, PNCC Behavior Change & Education Coordinator. “Approximately 90 per cent of their components are recyclable,”

SeatSmart aim to divert unwanted child car seats from landfill to recycling while raising awareness on car seat expiry dates and better safety outcomes for children travelling in vehicles

Around 40,000 child car seats expire every year and are sent to landfill unnecessarily impacting on the environment.

Child car seats have a limited life span of six to ten years - together these factors contribute to a growing disposal problem.

The SeatSmart programme works with Department of Corrections community work programme to dismantle the seats.

Council will review the programme after one year.
