"Crash at Maheno, Waitaki district; blocking SH1"

Police are attending reports of a multiple vehicle crash in Maheno, near Oamaru which occurred at about 6pm this evening.

Some of the occupants of the vehicles are trapped.

Three helicopters have been called to the scene.

One patient is in a critical condition, two patients are in a serious condition and two patients are in a moderate condition.

The following diversions are in place:

North bound traffic will be diverted at the intersection of Fortification Road and SH1.

Southbound traffic will be diverted at the intersection of Happy Valley Road and SH1.

More information will be released when it becomes available.
