"High tension powerlines down in Wairau Road."

Police and emergency services are in attendance at an incident in Wairau Road, Wairau Valley.

High tension powerlines have been struck by lightning and have come down onto the road.

Wairau Road is closed in both directions between Archers Road and Porana Roads.

It is anticipated the road will be closed until approximately 4.30pm this afternoon.

Police advise motorists to avoid the area if possible and expect delays.
