Search continuing for pair missing in Te Urewera

Please attribute to Senior Constable Tony Maultsaid:

Currently around 15 Police and LandSAR volunteers are continuing to search in Te Urewera for the father and son reported missing yesterday after they failed to return from a seven day tramp.

The search crews stayed in the bush overnight and resumed the operation at around 5:30am today.

They are currently focusing on the area around Te Waiotukapiti hut.

A helicopter has also been searching the wider area all morning.

Around 12 more LandSAR Volunteers from Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay are joining the search effort this afternoon.

Police ask that anyone who has been in Te Urewera over the last week, who may have seen the pair, contact Wairoa Police on 06 838 8345.

We understand some tramping groups were moving through the area last week and we’d really like to speak to them.
