Why some types of hot dog are not cool.

Almost everyone enjoys a Coromandel summer, but if you're hanging out with your pooch, think about the five second rule when it comes to the heat.

So if you can't keep the back of your hand on the sand, or the pavement for at least five seconds without it getting burnt, it will be the same for your dog's paws.

Also think about the amount of time you leave a dog in a car during a summer's day. The SPCA warns against leaving animals in cars even for short time over summer, as it doesn't take long for dehydration to set in. Try and keep them in a cool environment with lots of water.

Like the beach!

We all want dogs to have a cool time at the beach, but please remember that most spots will have summer restrictions – which means dogs may be prohibited or only allowed on the beach during certain times (usually before 9am and after 6pm).

These restrictions are not only to keep dogs off beaches when there are a lot of people, but to protect important bird habitat areas during their summer breeding time. Please watch for signs at beach access ways, check our website here or call and talk to our customer service team on 07 868 0200.

In specified areas, dogs may be exercised off lead, but you must have control at all times. Some things to note:

• Dogs must not enter areas sign-posted as bird nesting areas.
• Owners must remove dog droppings.
• All dogs aged over 3 months must wear a current registration tag.
• When walking your dog around our roads and town centres you must keep your dog on a leash.

Our compliance officers will be out and about daily and will have to issue $300 infringements for dogs on beaches during prohibited times or $200 for dogs off leash around our roads or town centres.

Our Annual Dog Report.

And here are the results of this year's annual dog control report:
• There were 4,797 registered dogs in the district.
• There were five disqualified owners and no probationary owners in the district.
• There were eight dogs classified as dangerous.
• There were 56 dogs classified as menacing.
• We issued 47 infringement notices over the year.
• We dealt with 18 dog attacks on people.
• We dealt with 73 dog attacks on animals.
• We were dealt with 45 dogs "rushing" offences.
• We dealt with a further 915 complaints including noise nuisance caused by barking dogs, dogs roaming, dogs fouling, dog welfare and dogs unregistered.
