TCDC - Weather Watch #1 Tuesday 2 January 2018

Weather Watch #1 Tuesday 2 January 2018

Our Emergency Management office is currently monitoring a couple of emerging weather events for those of you who are holidaying on the Coromandel or have friends and family staying and may want to amend your plans.

The first event is the potential for severe thunderstorms this afternoon / evening. These thunderstorms will be accompanied by localised heavy rain or downpours. In the western Coromandel Peninsula many of these thunderstorms are expected to be severe, where rainfall rates of 20 to 40mm/hr (or even 50mm/hr) are likely.

Please take care driving as rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.

The second event we are monitoring is the weather system forming in the Tasman. Current Met Service models suggest we can potentially expect heavy rain and winds from Thursday through to Saturday. This could include King tides.

We will be updating more regularly on our Facebook page here.
