Weather to ease but care still advised

The rain has begun to ease for most parts of the region but strong winds and king tide tonight is still reason for people to take care.

BOP CDEM duty group controller Jono Meldrum says the weather forecast from Metservice is looking more promising but to keep an eye out on any relevant updates.

“Local councils are updating their websites and social media with specific information for their respective areas but everyone should still keep an eye out on the conditions before heading outdoors.”

BOP CDEM is urging the public to avoid any unnecessary travel after strong winds has caused trees and debris to fall on cars and roads throughout the region.

“We know that there will be some visitors to the Bay returning home but if you can postpone your travel and stay off the roads until after the winds and inundation clears then we highly recommend you do so.”

The weather has acted as a timely reminder to have an evacuation plan in place – including for pets – and a supply of fresh food, water and clothes if required however there are no serious concerns at this point.

“It’s always important to be prepared but we are getting through the worse parts of the storm. If people are feeling a little worried then they should consider temporarily relocating themselves to be with friends and family before dark.”
