Compost for sale at Foxton Resource Recovery Park

Tuesday 30 January 2018

Blooming heck! Compost for sale at Foxton Resource Recovery Park

Foxton gardeners can now pick up a bag of compost when they dispose of their green waste.

In another step towards environmental sustainability, the Foxton Resource Recovery Park is offering 40-litre bags of compost for sale. Customers can choose from standard compost at $9 a bag, lawn and garden mix at $14 a bag, and premium compost at $14 a bag.

Horowhenua District Council’s Environmental Engineer Ryan Hughes said the charges helped to recover costs from mulching green waste and supplying the compost, which comes from a Kapiti-based company.

“Mulching and composting are expensive processes, but we’ve kept the cost as low as possible,” he said.

“Ideally, we’d like to create a closed loop, so that all of Horowhenua’s green waste is processed into compost for local use. Unfortunately, at present, the cost of setting up and running our own composting process is prohibitive, but Council will look at options for getting more involved in composting in the future. This is the best alternative until then,” said Mr Hughes.

Foxton Resource Recovery Park is located on the corner of Purcell and Stewart Streets in Foxton, and the compost is available on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 12 noon to 4pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 4pm.
