Fire conditions in the
Chatham Islands have eased overnight thanks to rain. An
expected southerly change did come through overnight, but
without the feared wind strength and this has meant
residents along Waitangi Wharf – Owhenga road have been
allowed to return home.
A Fire and Emergency Incident
Management Team has arrived on the island, and will be
assessing the conditions and best way to fight the fire. A
team of firefighters will leave from Wellington airport at
3pm this afternoon to join the
effort.
