A chance for youth to make a difference

Hawke’s Bay secondary school students with a passion for conservation have a chance to make a difference with applications now open for the 2018 Youth Environment Council (YEC).

Organised by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, the Youth Environment Council meets once a month to discuss environmental issues and organise environmental events in the region.

For 2018, YEC members will be able to meet with staff from HBRC to learn more about local government and the community, as well as getting the opportunity to lead an environmental activity within their schools.

HBRC Community Engagement Coordinator Sally Chandler says this year HBRC is setting its long-term plan and YEC members will be encouraged to be fully engaged in the process including seeking feedback from their peers.

“We will be encouraging the Youth Environment members to interact with councillors and later in the year there will be an opportunity for them to present their year’s activities at a meeting of the Regional Council,” says Mrs Chandler.

The Youth Environment Council is involved with school events, beach clean ups and advocacy and Sally Chandler says HBRC would like to hear from students who are keen to take the lead in their communities.

“In return the student members receive public speaking skills, new friends and lots of support with their events.”

With limited places available, students wanting to get involved should visit the Youth Environment Council's Facebook page or www.hbrc.co.nz to apply to join.
