Security cameras for Rotorua buses

Security cameras for Rotorua buses
Saturday 10 February 2018

Bay of Plenty Regional Council Public Transport Committee has recommended that security cameras should be installed on 20 Rotorua Cityride buses from the start of the 2018/19 financial year following feedback from passengers and drivers.

The recommendation was made at Friday's Public Transport Committee meeting, with the decision going forward to Bay of Plenty Regional Council for final decision.

Public Transport Committee Chairman Lyall Thurston says last year’s Bus User Satisfaction Survey found that personal security ranked highly amongst Rotorua passengers.

“Sixty-nine per cent of those surveyed said that personal safety is important to them and emphasises we need to look after both passengers and drivers,” Councillor Thurston says.

“Installing cameras will help monitor passengers and behaviour, while just as important the presence of cameras will give an assurance to bus users.”

Along with driver protection and improved passenger safety, benefits of CCTV also include theft and violence protection, enforcement of passenger rules and regulations and to aid investigation into complaints and disputes.
