2.5 tonnes of meat and 10,000 wine bottles for Golden Oldies

2.5 tonnes of meat and 10,000 bottles of wine for Golden Oldies feast

04 April 2018

What do you get when you combine 2.5 tonnes of meat, 700 cucumbers, 100 litres of pesto and 10,000 bottles of wine?

The result is a series of gourmet feasts to delight some 5,000 Golden Oldies sports enthusiasts and supporters, who are descending upon Christchurch throughout the month of April for the 2018 Christchurch Casino Golden Oldies Sports Celebration.

“Golden Oldies events are famous for their festive atmosphere and we’re expecting it to be a great party,” says Festival Hospitality Event Manager Sarah Robinson.

Festival Hospitality is a collaboration between two of Christchurch’s top catering companies, Moveable Feasts and Continental Catering, who have joined forces to whip up some delicious meals for our Golden Oldies visitors.

Ms Robinson says this is one of the largest events they’ve ever catered for, with over 900 people expected at Sunday night’s Welcome Event dinner, which kicks off the popular Netball and Hockey week and 2,500 at the Grand Finale dinner at the end of Rugby week.

So far, the numbers are impressive with 2.5 tonnes of meat, 10,000 bread rolls, 500 loaves of bread, 100 litres of pesto, 700 cucumbers and 10,000 bottles of wine secured for the tournament.

Top chefs Paul Sellers and Mat Jones from Continental Catering and Moveable Feasts have collaborated over the festival’s Kiwiana-themed menu, which Ms Robinson says showcases some of the best fresh and local produce Canterbury has to offer.

City promotion agency ChristchurchNZ is supporting event organiser Vintage Sport and Leisure to bring the Golden Oldies to Christchurch, marking the first time in history multiple Golden Oldies sports festivals have been held together in the same city.

ChristchurchNZ general manager of attraction Linda Falwasser says this event is a fantastic opportunity for Christchurch to showcase our new city and welcome international visitors to our region, with players arriving from 16 different countries to compete in the iconic international sporting event.

“As city hosts, we are thrilled to be welcoming one of Christchurch’s largest ever sporting events to our city and encourage the whole community to get involved, check out the games and enjoy the experience,” Ms Falwasser says

Ms Robinson says the public are welcome to come down to the Golden Oldies marquee in South Hagley Park during game days, grab a bite and share a beverage with the players and their supporters.

“Major events like these give such a positive boost to our local economy, involving everyone from local suppliers, sporting clubs and centres, accommodation providers not to mention our transport community,” she says.
