Construction of New Waiau Transfer Station Kicks Off

Construction of New Waiau Transfer Station Kicks Off

Construction of the new Waiau Transfer Station, which will include drop-off facilities for waste and recycling for a range of materials, has started this week.

Due to the land damage sustained as a result of the November 2016 earthquake, a rebuild on the existing transfer station site was untenable and the decision was made to relocate to an adjacent site.

Initial earthworks have begun this week, with project completion scheduled for later this year.

The council’s Waste Minimisation Team Leader Sally Cracknell says that once construction is complete, the surrounding area will benefit from modern waste minimisation facilities.

“It will be fantastic to have this facility up and running, including the recycling facilities which will help our efforts to increase the amount of the district’s waste that is diverted from landfill.”

The new transfer station is being funded through the Ministry for the Environment Waste Minimisation Fund and the council’s 2017/18 reimbursement from the landfill levy. This covers all the associated building and infrastructure costs, as well as site works that include moving over 3,000m3 of soil.

Amuri-Hurunui Ward Councillor Nicky Anderson says the Hurunui District has always prided itself on providing good waste minimisation facilities for residents and the new transfer station will ensure this continues.

“I look forward to the completion of the project and the community being able to make use of what will be a great asset that will enable us to progress our waste minimisation efforts.”
