May is always a special month for Dunedin Public Libraries – a chance to shake off the quiet air of respectability and invite people to come on, feel the noise.

Dunedin Public Libraries have been celebrating Kiwi song writers during New Zealand Music Month for 14 years, and the community’s love of music in the libraries shows no sign of abating.

This weekend 50 live acts will fill every available space of City Library. With musical styles ranging from honeyed blues to ukulele punk, and performances in the most unexpected places, the Nook and Cranny Music Festival is Dunedin’s tribute to New Zealand songwriting.

Dunedin Public Libraries have already held a range of musical events including a talk exploring the Hocken Library’s music collection by curator and Dunedin Sound fan Amanda Mills, gig nights at different libraries, plus a capella from Dunedin Harmony Chorus singing at Mosgiel and City Libraries. This week there is also the launch party for a new book by rock biographer, Dr Ian Chapman.
