The Coromandel to Host NZ Rally Championship
Rev up
for 18 August when the Coromandel will play host to a round
of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally
Championship.
HQ for the Gold Rush Rally of Coromandel will be the Mercury Bay Multi-Sports Park in Whitianga. The competition will take place over 135km of forestry and Council roads across the northern half of the district.
The proposed route takes in Tapu-Coroglen Rd, the 309 Rd and Port Charles Rd, and will involve some road closures on 18 August.
Our Council is working with Rally NZ and the local communities along the proposed route to discuss the plan and provide information to residents.
Community groups will have a chance to raise funds by providing food for drivers and crews, or by acting as marshalls for the event.
"We're really excited to be hosting the rally again, and all the drivers and crews who come for the weekend to take part," says our Mayor Sandra Goudie.
"Last year we had about 60 drivers and their crews, plus all the visitors who come to watch. It's a great opportunity for community groups to raise funds and it's great to see how people get behind this event."
This year's line-up of drivers hasn't been announced yet.
As in previous rally events, spectators are welcome to view the cars and crews up close at the rally HQ at the Mercury Bay Multi-Sports Park.

Port Charles Road, Waikawau Road, Tuateawa Road and Kennedy Bay Road.
All of
Port Charles Road from the intersection of Port Jackson and
Colville roads
and including all of Waikawai Beach
Road,
and including all of Tuateawa Road,
and
including all of Kennedy Bay Road to house number
1424.
The period of the closure: 7:00am to
2:30pm.
Cars will be travelling from Port Charles to
Kennedy Bay.
The 309 Road
From the
Waterworks gate to house number 1715.
The period of the
closure: 7:45am to 5:45pm
Cars will be travelling from
the Waterworks to Whitianga.
Tapu-Coroglen Road
From house number 436 Tapu-Coroglen Road
to the intersection with SH25.
The period of the closure:
9:00am to 4:45pm.
Cars will be travelling from Coroglen
to Tapu.
Joan Gaskell Drive
From the
intersection of SH25 to the intersection with Kupe
Drive.
The period of the closure: 2:45pm to
7:00pm.
Blacksmith Lane
From the
intersection of Albert Street to The Esplanade.
The
period of the closure:- 3:00pm to
7:30pm.
