TIMARU DISTRICT COUNCIL
MEDIA RELEASE

15/6/2018

For Immediate Use

Timaru District Council will be lighting up the dark winter night on August 4 to celebrate 150 years of achievement of the whole community.

150 years of history and progress is set to be displayed in an innovative way at the free event, which takes place on King George Place from 5pm to 8pmon August 4.

Timaru District Mayor, Damon Odey, says the event is about celebrating what the whole community has achieved in the past 150 years.

“The event marks the 150th anniversary of the first meeting of the Timaru Borough Council, but it’s more about celebrating the progress we’ve made as a district from the days first long drop dunnies to the modern, connected, vibrant and fully plumbed district we are today.

“It’s not a celebration of the council so much as a celebration of how each and every resident of the district has played their part in getting us to where we are today.

“A district is nothing without its people so we’re hoping as many people as possible come to celebrate with us on the night!”

King George Place and part of Sophia Street will be closed to traffic for the night, which will feature an amazing light display and a performance by the Alpine Energy Timaru Brass Band, also in its 150th year.

There will also be food vendors as well as family friendly activities from the various council departments.

“It’s going to be something that town has never seen before, so make sure you mark the date in your calendars to bring the family and celebrate with us,” said Damon.
