All Blacks v France Game Provides Mid-Winter Boost for Dunedin

Dunedin, New Zealand, 15 June, 2018: Dunedin will receive a welcome boost to the mid-winter economy in June, as the Steinlager Series pitting the All Blacks against France rolls into town, attracting rugby fans from across the South Island.

Based on figures from the Bledisloe Cup which netted $9.3 million for the local economy, the match will benefit local businesses such as accommodation providers, restaurants and tourist attractions and create a spike in demand for certain goods, including an anticipated 30% increase in ‘French Fries’ according to a local wholesaler.

John Christie Director Enterprise Dunedin said, “The match is the latest in a bumper year of events for Dunedin, which is fast gaining a reputation as a diverse, capable and welcoming host city.

“June is an excellent time of year to experience the city, with plenty of activities for visitors to enjoy whilst in town for the All Blacks v France game”.

Adding a touch of French flavour to the city over match weekend, the Otago Farmers Market will feature French cooking demonstrations and themed decorations in a nod to both national teams. In the evenings, the Dunedin railway station will be lit up, providing a dramatic touch of colour along the walking route to the stadium, which will also feature pockets of entertainment en-route.

New Zealand Rugby is running community engagement activities locally during the week leading up to the match, including a volunteer’s day event and an ‘Inspire a Nation’ competition, inviting Dunedinites to create motivational speeches and win the chance to deliver it to the All Blacks personally ahead of the match.

The only All Blacks fixture in Dunedin this year, the game is expected to be a gripping finale to the French tour. It has been almost ten years since the sides last met in Dunedin, which previously resulted in a win for the French at Carisbrook. This will be the first game for the visiting side at the Forsyth Barr Stadium.
