Timely Marine Sciences Conference in Napier

This week the New Zealand Marine Science Society’s 57th Annual Conference is being hosted by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council in Napier, Tuesday 3 to Thursday 5 July.

Regional Council Chief Executive James Palmer will welcome around 220 of New Zealand’s leading marine science professionals and post graduate students.

“In a region where we have an increased focus on marine issues, hosting this conference is timely, and we would like to come away with new knowledge and insights into how we can improve our management of our marine coastal area,” says conference chair, HBRC scientist Anna Madarasz-Smith.

Conference topics cover a wide range of marine science from marine biosecurity and changing coasts and oceans, to consideration of New Zealand’s marine policies and attention to humans in ecosystems.

Mangroves, kelp, snapper and octopus are some of the species that will be the focus of expert speakers from universities, government agencies, consultancies and research institutes.

There will also be a special session on the impacts of the Kaikoura earthquake on the marine environment, and artist Gabby O’Connor will be talking about communicating research through art.

The Conference is being held at the Napier Conference Centre.
