Aktive - Auckland Sport & Recreation (Aktive) has made appointments for two new roles in the organisation - Darryn Hoare as Youth Sport Advisor (11-18 years), a two-year contract position, and Laura Quilter as Community Sport Advisor.

Debbie Curgenven, Community Sport Manager, Aktive says the appointments will support efforts in getting more people recreating and playing sport in Auckland.

"Our goal is make the Auckland the world’s most active city," says Ms Curgenven. "A fundamental aspect of this is ensuring we have the right people concentrating on the right areas to boost sport and recreation in Tāmaki Makaurau.

"Communities and young people are key pillars of our community sport strategy - the Auckland Approach to Community Sport, and we are excited to have Darryn and Laura on board to help our work in these important areas."

As Youth Sport Advisor, Mr Hoare will be responsible for auditing sport provision in intermediate and secondary schools across the region, which will inform strategy at a regional level. He will also facilitate leadership and advice regarding principles of youth sport development and will support the deployment of initiatives such as Talent Leadership & Character (TLC)and Good Sports.

Mr Hoare brings a wealth of experience and a sound knowledge of youth and school sporting systems. His previous roles teaching physical education, managing the Australian Sports Commission’s national sports participation programme in Queensland and most recently Director of Sport at Diocesan School for Girls in Auckland.

Newly appointed Community Sport Advisor, Laura Quilter will be responsible for providing support for a number of initiatives as part of the Auckland Approach to Community Sport including HERA - Everyday Goddess, KiwiSport and Good Sports.

Ms Quilter has strong writing, coaching and digital technology skills and was an elite swimmer, having competed at the Surf Life Saving World Championships and the Commonwealth Games. She combines her swimming and coaching experience and uses these insights to help provide better quality experiences. Her most recent role was Marketing and Communications Coordinator at AUT Millennium.

Aktive is a charitable trust that has been established to make Auckland the world’s most active city. It is a key strategic partner of Sport NZ, Auckland Council and major grant makers and funders. Aktive invests more than $11m per annum in a range of delivery partners, organisations and projects that will get more people recreating and playing sport in Auckland, with focuses on young people and identified communities.
