August is an exciting month for book lovers with an extensive programme of visiting authors at the Palmerston North Central Library.

First-up on Thursday August at 6.30pm is an evening with farming legend Mark Warren who’ll be sharing his hilarious off-roading, hill-seeking, muddy morning adventures.

The popular ‘Off the Page’ series continues Friday August 3, with award- winning Kapiti writer Mandy Hager, in conversation with Tina Makereti. The evening kicks off at 6pm with an open-mic session followed by light refreshments and then the main event at 7pm. Mandy will discuss her most recent work, Heloise (2017) and Ash Arising (2018), as well as her long career as a well-loved New Zealand author. Mandy is an extraordinarily prolific writer of politically charged young adult and adult literary fiction. She also teaches creative writing.

Mandy will also lead a novel writing workshop on Saturday August 4, 10am – 12noon.

On Tuesday, August 21 at 6.30pm join Julie Thomas for a discussion about her new novel, Levi’s War, the final chapter in the Horowitz trilogy which began with, The Keeper of Secrets andRachel’s Legacy.

National Poetry Day Friday, August 24 is celebrated with unleashing the power of poetry with Where the Wild Words Are at 7.30pm with poets from Makaro Press, Fitzbeck Book and Seraph Press. The line-up includes Helen Rickerby, Renée, Johanna Aitchison, Helen Lehndorf, Peter Rawnsley, John Boyd, Robin Peace and Mary McCallum. They will bewitch, berate, busk and bewilder.

For rugby fans on August 27 at 6.30pm there is an entertaining evening with Peter Bills who will discuss his new book The Jersey: the secrets behind the world’s most successful team. Peter was granted unprecedented access to the All Blacks community and the result is an extraordinary and unique rugby book.

The launch of Wildbore: A photographic legacy by local environmental scientist and historian Catherine Knight is Wednesday August 29 at 5.45pm. The book explores Pohangina Valley farmer Charles E. Wildbore’s world through his remarkable photographs.
