Art in all its extraordinary forms bring Auckland to life this October, as Artweek Aucklandreturns for the eighth year, from 6 – 14 October. This ten-day festival encourages visitors to experience the diverse and extraordinary arts community Auckland has to offer. Ten precincts (Central City, Parnell, Ponsonby, K’Road, Arch Hill, Newmarket, Devonport, South, West, East) across Auckland city celebrate with a programme of unique exhibitions and events; including over 50 free guided tours, both public and private art, drawing clubs, food, feminist exhibitions and workshops.
Artweek Auckland unpacks the visual arts world and delivers a sassy, engaging and inclusive programme for the week with something for everyone. For the experienced gallery goer, take the challenge and explore a new precinct you haven’t visited before, you may discover some amazing new talent. For a newcomer, take a spot on a free guided tour and discover how easy it is to navigate the gallery scene.
The popular Late Night Art returns to the Heart of the City, as Auckland’s Central City serves up an evening of arty activity, with galleries staying open late on Tuesday 9th to join the party, including the Auckland Art Gallery. Visitors can try the delicious creations of five of Auckland’s top food vendors, with food directly inspired by works of five artists in StreetArtDego throughout the week, or stop by Snickel Lane for a photoshoot amongst flowers with Grenfell Photography as part of Real Life Floral Filters. Heart of the City will also offer a full programme of events and exhibitions, including the artistic transformation of Auckland urban spaces with Changing Lanes.
Enjoy a night out on K’Road on Thursday 11th, as Electric Night returns with galleries open late; take a guided tour, or explore on two wheels with a cycle tour, ending with an after party at Anthology Lounge. Cordis hosts Because you’re worth it!, a free panel with Caroline Stone, discussing copyright in relation to art in New Zealand.
Discover the diversity of Artweek in Ponsonby and Arch Hill, with Ponsonby on a plate. A collaboration with artist Helen Perrett, 100 lucky café goers will get to take home a free hand painted plate decorated with unique images of dogs. Whitespace Contemporary Art host an exhibition by Penny Howard in their new space, celebrating powerful Pacific women, including a stunning portrait of musician Anika Moa.
Newmarket and Parnell celebrate their fantastic galleries with walks, talks, beeswax candle rolling, and life drawing. Parnell showcases a variety of art from Japanese artisans at Swan Hotel in HARU NO KAWA, including jewellery, tattoo design and kimonos. Delve into Newmarket’s Highwic House with the Highwic Drawing Club, a free drawing class which gives an opportunity for budding artists to test their skills in the form of life drawing.
Now a landmark event, GLOW returns to Windsor Park in Devonport, with students from Unitec School of Architecture designing and building spectacular light installations with zero waste and zero budget. Kicking off the celebrations in Devonport is Friday after Five, a family friendly street party with art, food and music.
Head South to experience arts collective COVEN, to question gender binary in Aotearoa’s suffrage movement and feminist history through the use of photography, sculpture and performance. Discover exhibitions across Papakura Art Gallery, The Pah Homestead, Dornwell Studios, Franklin Arts Centre, Nathan Homestead, Franklin Arts Centre, and Fresh Gallery Otara.
Go West, with Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery presenting From the Shore, bringing together acclaimed works from recent Venice Biennale artists Lisa Reihana and Tracey Moffatt, as well as new commissions from Tanu Gago, Robert George, Nova Paul and Linda T. Or head East, with Bradley Lane Project, a 3-day street art celebration, including free Street Art Workshops and 5 new outdoor murals added to the impression 19 murals already on display in Glen Innes.
