Violent bag snatch incident in Remuera

Wednesday, 15 August 2018 - 12:46pm

Please attribute to Detective Senior Sergeant Lloyd Schmid, Auckland City Police:

Police are looking to locate 23-year-old Jaedon Dawson who we believe can assist us with our investigation into a violent incident yesterday afternoon (14 August 2018) where an elderly woman had her handbag snatched.

The 80-year-old victim was leaving the New World carpark on Clonbern Road in Remuera at around 3.45pm when a man has approached her and taken her handbag. During the struggle she has fallen hard to the ground and hit her head. The offender has then jumped into a car which was waiting nearby and was driven away.

The victim remains in Auckland Hospital with head injuries but thankfully is in a stable condition.

Police staff quickly attended the scene and with the assistance of our Air Support Unit (Eagle Helicopter), further enquiries resulted in the vehicle involved in the incident being located at an address in Remuera. The alleged driver of the vehicle, a female aged 25 years, was arrested and is assisting Police with our enquiries.

We are urgently looking to locate Jaedon Dawson, who is described as being 178cm in height and of large build. He has a number of tattoos including the words “Respect Maori Blood” tattooed on his chest.

Detective Senior Sergeant Lloyd Schmid says this was an absolutely appalling crime targeting a vulnerable member of our community.

“It is through sheer luck that the victim is not more seriously injured, but she and her family are understandably very shaken by what has occurred. We are now asking for any members of our community who know where Jaedon is to please contact Police immediately on 111.”

If you have information which can assist our investigation team then please contact the Auckland City District Crime Squad on (09) 302-6557. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
