Phil Collins to rock Christchurch in 2019

Thursday 23 August 2018

Rockstar Phil Collins has announced plans to treat Christchurch fans to a concert in 2019.

ChristchurchNZ General Manager of Destination and Attraction, Loren Heaphy, says Christchurch is delighted to host the global music legend for a gig on February 4, 2019.

“We’re stoked that Collins has chosen to play in Christchurch. He certainly won’t be disappointed – we’re expecting a sell-out crowd of die-hard fans and our city will be pumping with local and national visitors,” Heaphy says.

The former Genesis singer and drummer has been rocking stages across the US and Europe as part of his Not Dead Yet: Live! Tour, presented by TEG Dainty.

Vbase Board Chair Cllr Tim Scandrett says ChristchurchNZ and Vbase have been working hard behind the scenes to secure the concert for Christchurch.

“This is another example of the amazing collaboration going on in our city and we’re very excited to give Christchurch an opportunity to play host to Phil Collins,” Scandrett says.

“And watch this space – Christchurch is set to become the concert capital of the South Island as our entertainment venues come online and fill up with many more world-class national and international headline acts.”

Chris Wallace, Acting General Manager Vbase says; “Everyone at Vbase is very excited about being part of the team that secured this great opportunity to make life more eventful for the people of Christchurch – it will be a fantastic night and we can’t wait to make it happen!”

One of the most successful artists of the 1980s, the English soft-rocker has attracted sell-out crowds across the UK and Europe since launching his tour last June. The hit-maker will be playing at Christchurch Stadium (formerly AMI Stadium) for one night only.

Collins’ backing band will feature long-time touring members including guitarist Daryl Stuermer, keyboardist Brad Cole, bassist Leland Sklar and percussionist Luis Conte, along with a horn selection and backup vocalists. Phil Collins’ 16-year old son, Nicolas, will round up the band on drums.

With over 280 million records sold, in a career spanning almost 50 years as a solo artist and a member of Genesis, Phil Collins is a generational icon and cultural legend. Not Dead Yet: Live!, titled after Phil Collins’ 2016 memoir of the same name, is a celebration of his life’s work.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday 5 September from 10am (NZST) at Christchurch – Christchurch Stadium (formerly known as AMI Stadium) – www.ticketek.co.nz
