Police can confirm one person has been taken to Middlemore Hospital with moderate injuries following reports of a crash at Meremere this morning.

Just before 6:40am a car pulling out of Island Block Road to head north on State Highway 1 has been hit by another car travelling south.

The driver of the car that was hit was the person taken to hospital.

A ute travelling south on SH 1 has then hit the two cars, followed by two other trucks also separately colliding into those vehicles.

One northbound and one southbound lane were blocked at the time, but the road reopened fully just before 10:30am.

There is still some backlog of traffic in the area, so motorists are asked to have patience.
