Crash in Dunedin involving police car

Attributable to Inspector Matenga Gray, Otago Coastal Area Commander:

A Police officer and a member of the public are receiving treatment in hospital after being involved in a crash in Dunedin this morning.

Five vehicles – a Police car, a bus, and three other cars – were involved in the crash at the intersection of York Place and Smith Street just before 8:30am.

Initial information suggests the male officer who was driving the Police car possibly suffered a medical event and the car has collided with the other vehicles.

One woman was trapped by a vehicle and has since been freed.

She received moderate to serious injuries and has been taken to hospital.

A baby in her care was also checked at hospital but is understood to have minor injuries.

Police are investigating to determine the exact circumstances of what happened.
