Public praised for information leading to Amberley arrests

Police would like to thank members of the public for information that led to three arrests this morning in Amberley.

A 16-year-old and two 14-year-olds have been apprehended following a number of vehicle thefts.

A white Mazda Atenza hatchback was stolen overnight in Christchurch and driven to Cadman St in Cheviot, where a Toyota Altezza was broken in to but not taken.

The Mazda Atenza was then driven to Waiau where it was abandoned on Achray St before a red Mazda Capella was stolen and driven to Hanmer Springs where it was dumped on Jollies Pass Rd.

A silver Nissan Primera was then stolen and abandoned soon after on Argelins Rd, Hanmer Springs.

Around 7.50am the three teens were then seen taking a grey Toyota Corolla station wagon, which they drove towards Culverden.

Police located the stolen station wagon in Culverden and followed it south where it sped off and attempted to evade Police.

Police staff from Rural, Highway Patrol, Waimakariri, CVST and dog units set up cordons and followed the vehicle, which was eventually stopped on Ram Paddock Rd near Amberley after road spikes were deployed.

Two offenders were apprehended near the vehicle but the driver fled across farmland.

Police dogs tracked the driver for more than an hour before he was found hiding up a tree at a property off Mound Rd, Amberley.

“Police would like to thank members of the public who assisted in locating the vehicle and offenders,” said Sergeant Rob Irvine.

“It was great team work by police and the public to target and catch the offenders and shows the value of everyone working together to keep our communities safe.”

The teenagers will be appearing in the Christchurch Youth Court.
