New Zealand Police’s purpose is to ensure every person who lives, works or transits through New Zealand is safe and feels safe – on the roads and in our communities.

Inspector Ash Tabb, Road Policing Manager for Canterbury, says to help do our part in keeping people safe on their journeys in the Hurunui we are deploying two more dedicated road policing staff to the Hurunui.

“Police’s role in road safety is around prevention and enforcement activities.

Our focus is on preventing the four main behaviours we know contribute to death and serious injury on our roads.

These behaviours are driving too fast for the conditions, driving impaired (by alcohol, drugs, or fatigue), driving distracted, or not wearing your seatbelt.

“Having additional Highway Patrol staff deployed on highways and rural roads recognises that these high speed roads are where our greatest risk of death and serious injury lie.”

These Highway Patrol staff will support the North Canterbury area and will be based in Hanmer Springs.

Hurunui District Councillor Julia McLean says as chair of Hurunui’s Road Safety Committee I’m thrilled to learn more police resources are being allocated to highway patrol in the Hurunui.

“The Hurunui District has an extensive state highway and local road network, and every effort is being made by stakeholders to prevent serious harm and injury on our roads.”
