The South Island as you’ve never seen it

This month a group of 22 passionate Australasian content creators will tour the South Island armed with the latest GoPro technology to record and share their journeys.

The trip is part of Tourism New Zealand’s South Island Journeys campaign aimed at encouraging Australians to explore the South Island in autumn.

Among the group of GoPro advocates and athletes travelling to New Zealand are The Bachelor Australia’s Matthew “Matty J” Johnson, Vodafone Warriors fan engagement staffer Johnny Tuivasa-Sheck, surfer and marine biologist Brinkley Davies, two-time Winter Olympian Danielle Scott, and professional supercross racer Dan Reardon.

“This is a fun venture that complements our annual South Island Journeys campaign and will provide authentic, first person experiences of some of the #nzmustdos in the South Island including mountain biking, hiking Fox Glacier, kayaking, and jetboating. The influencers all have a substantial social media following across a wide demographic, effectively extending the reach of our South Island Journeys campaign,” says Andrew Waddel, Tourism New Zealand’s General Manager Australia.

“GoPro is a global brand renowned for its ‘technology that tells stories’ and storytelling is at the heart of what we do at Tourism New Zealand – telling the New Zealand story to the world and encouraging people to visit. Our partnership with GoPro and Britz Campervans allows visitors and social media users to participate and share in the adventure of travelling through the South Island.”

After flying into Christchurch, the advocates will travel different sections of the five South Island Journeys itineraries and record their journey on GoPro’s new product, the HERO7 BLack camera (launching at the same time). Britz Campervans is providing on-ground transport.

The South Island Journeys campaign promotes travel along five itineraries: Top of the South (encompassing Christchurch, Hanmer Springs, Murchison, Marlborough, Nelson, and Kaikoura); Alpine Lakes Journey (including Christchurch, Wanaka, Queenstown, Lake Tekapo, and Mackenzie district); TranzAlpine Explorer (taking travellers through Arthur’s Pass to West Coast and south to Franz Josef, Wanaka, and Queenstown); Southern Scenic Route (covering Christchurch, Dunedin, the Catlins, Invercargill, Te Anau, and Milford Sound); and Discover the South (including Christchurch, Oamaru, Dunedin, Central Otago and Queenstown).
GoPro’s Vice President, Product Management Pablo Lema, says New Zealand is a content creator’s dream location.

“New Zealand’s South Island offers a diversity of experiences, totally different from your everyday. This was the perfect place for us to shoot. The trip has been designed to immerse the group in New Zealand’s eco-system,” he says.

The South Island Journeys campaign runs until 4 November 2018 with travel packages available between March and May 2019.
