Annual Auckland homes consented at record levels

Annual Auckland homes consented at record levels

28 September 2018

A record 12,959 new homes were consented to be built in Auckland in the year ended August 2018, up 26 percent from the previous August year, Stats NZ said today.

The 12,959 homes consented in the last 12 months is very similar to the high levels seen in the year ended June 2004 (12,937) and in the mid 1970s.

“The 2004 peak in Auckland homes consented was mainly driven by growth in the number of apartments. This new record is also driven by townhouses, flats, and units; and retirement village units,” construction statistics manager Melissa McKenzie said.

“While the number of homes consented in the last 12 months is similar to the previous peaks in 1974 and 2004, Auckland’s population has increased significantly over that time,” Ms McKenzie said.

Of the 13 wards that make up the Auckland region, 11 consented more new homes in the August 2018 year compared with the August 2017 year.

The numbers of new homes consented across Auckland in the latest year were:

• 2,624 in Albany ward, up 3.5 percent from the previous August year

• 1,530 in Manurewa-Papakura ward, up 61 percent

• 1,313 in Waitematā (central city) and Gulf ward, up 35 percent

• 1,113 in Manukau ward, up 158 percent – driven by more apartments.

Rodney and Franklin wards had fewer new homes consented than in the August 2017 year.

Annual New Zealand homes consented nears 33,000

Consents for 32,759 new homes were issued across New Zealand in the year ended August 2018, up 6.6 percent from the previous August year, but still below the record 40,025 consented in the February 1974 year.
