App Workshops Launched for Adults
Popular Remuera destination for children’s technology and gaming learning, TenForward Technology Lounge, is launching a series of workshops targeted at adults in the community who are not so tech-savvy.
Covering a variety of topics such as how to plan a trip on public transport using Google Maps; how to sell things on TradeMe using your phone; using social media to connect with your family and friends; and even how to write a good online dating profile - the two hour workshops are designed to show how simple apps on a phone can help people improve their lives.
TenForward owner, Belinda Hope, explains that while adults are not digital natives, they are often overlooked for technology support.
“Older adults especially, have not grown up in a digital world, and frequently struggle with using smart phones and internet services with the ease and efficiency that young people do.
They are often frustrated by asking their own (sometimes reluctant) children and grandchildren to keep helping them, and their experience isn't ideal - and they often give up, it’s just too hard.
We want TenForward to be a community resource where people can come in to learn a particular skill using their phone, and then they can feel more confident about navigating the world, one online tool at a time,” Belinda says.
The Orakei Local Board have recognised the value of this service, and have provided a Grant that allows 100 people to attend any workshop for free. Tickets for additional sessions are $20.
The workshops are designed for beginner phone or internet users, and are repeated several times for the rest of the year to give more people a chance to attend.
TenForward Technology Lounge is an after school care and holiday programme centre for children, where they can learn advanced tech skills such as gaming, game development, coding, online safety and more.
Belinda says, “it makes sense to utilise our learning facility during the day time when children are at school, and we can help people of all ages in the community to enhance their online experience with our technology workshops.”
TenForward was also a Finalist in the 2018 Orakei Local Board Business Awards.
