Time to sing out about our unsung heroes

Wednesday 24 October

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, ages and backgrounds, but they all have one thing in common – a selfless commitment to making the world a safer place – which is why we acknowledge them in the annual Safety in the City awards.

The awards recognise and celebrate individuals, groups, programmes and safety heroes that make exceptional contributions to the safety of the city, and Mayor Justin Lester is encouraging the public to put forward their nominations now.

“Nominations are now open for the public to tell us about stand-out safety heroes in their neighbourhood and community, whether it be one of the dedicated people in our emergency services, an individual who has demonstrated bravery or a fight against crime, or a group that has made a commitment to keeping Wellingtonians safe.

“Previous winners of the Safety in the City awards include one-off incidents and longer term actions, but they all contribute to us maintaining our World Health Organisation International Safe Community designation since 2006,” adds the Mayor.

Last year’s winners included the Tawa Community Patrollers, outreach worker Bernice Te Ahuru, and CCTV camera volunteer Jordan Moore.

The Safety in the City awards will be presented and celebrated during a ceremony held at Te Wharewaka o Pōneke on Tuesday 20 November 2018.

Send nominations by Friday 9 November 2018 to Lily Kemble-Welch or call 04 801 3107.

Nominations should include:

• name, address (if known) and contact details of person or organisation

• description of what they did or do

• a short biography

• your own name, address and contact details.
