Plans in place for possible heavy rainfall

Christchurch City Council staff are preparing for heavy rain today and overnight, but, at this stage, no significant flooding is expected.

Heavy rain is forecast for the city.

Forecasts are variable on rainfall in the next 24 hours, but with no spring high tides due, the rain is expected to only result in surface street flooding in low-lying areas and around rivers.

As a precaution, dredging equipment is being taken out of the Heathcote River, and a temporary pump is being placed in Maces Road.

“We’re keeping a close eye on forecasts, with particular focus on our local meteorologist’s reports,” Land Drainage Manager Keith Davison says.

“We will click into our wet weather response plan if the situation worsens, and keep people updated,” he says.
