White Ribbon Community Event Phillipstown Community Hub

In support of White Ribbon Day, the Christchurch community will attend a family friendly event 10.30am tomorrow, Saturday 10th November, at the Phillipstown Community Hub.

Co-ordinated in partnership between the Canterbury Family Violence Collaboration, the Phillipstown Community Hub, the Ministry of Social Development, and the Christchurch Police, the Christchurch White Ribbon event highlights will include Twin Harmony brothers performing original songs and speaking on family violence, live graffiti art workshop with young people led by renowned Street Artist Ikarus, delivery of the White Ribbon message by key local speakers, and live haka performed by the Limited Service Volunteers.

The recently completed outdoor pizza oven will offer up freshly cooked pizza, and Police will crank up the BBQ. A competitive tug-o-war that may well include the Fire crew will be serenaded by local music performer Daniel Waho. Children can participate in the wearable art competition, Tahu FM will keep the groove pumping with onsite DJ and giveaways, and pony hugging is also another free activity available to families attending.

Key themes will focus on Respectful Relationships, and in particular encouraging people to take the online pledge through the national White Ribbon website, declaring they will not condone violence by men against women, and that they will stand up and speak out against it.

Family Violence has remained a significant social problem for the Canterbury community with 31,911 people being involved in family violence episodes reported to the Christchurch Metro Police between 1 July 2016 and 21 September 2018. The number of family violence episodes reported involving those people were 22,351 and 12,416 of these episodes involved children. Research suggests that only 20% of family violence is reported to Police, equating to one incident every ten minutes in our community. White Ribbon Day is about raising awareness, challenging attitudes and behaviours, and supporting change for families.
