Fatal crashes offer timely reminder

"Fatal crashes offer timely reminder "

Canterbury Police are urging drivers and passengers to buckle up and drive safely after two fatal crashes within 12 hours offered a timely reminder yesterday.

Enquiries are ongoing into a single vehicle crash on Gloucester Street, Christchurch, around 11.15pm where one person died and three others were taken to hospital.

Earlier on Friday, around 11.10am, one person died in a crash at the intersection of Colombo Street and Sandyford Street in Sydenham, Christchurch.

Two others were transported to hospital in a serious condition.

“Restraints save lives, it’s that simple,” says Superintendent Lane Todd.

“Anyone who chooses not to wear a seatbelt only increases their risk of injury or death if they end up in a crash.

“Being properly restrained reduces your chance of death or serious injury in a crash by 60 percent in the front seat and 44 percent in the back seat.”

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating both incidents.
