Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) reminds residents and visitors that the year-round, daily 8.00pm to 8.00am alcohol restriction is now in place and being enforced by Police in central Queenstown, Frankton, Arrowtown, central Wanaka and Hāwea.

QLDC Chief Alcohol Inspector Sian Swinney said the year-round restriction was extended following consultation earlier this year and the Council adoption of the Alcohol Restrictions in Public Places Bylaw 2018. The aim of the restrictions is to improve public safety for everyone and support a more family-friendly environment in our town centres.

“Police are now enforcing the extended ban and will be giving out fines of $250 to anyone caught drinking in a restricted area,” she said.

A further 24-hour alcohol restriction will kick in as usual on 27 December through until 6 January 2019.

“We wish all of our residents and visitors a safe and happy holiday period and ask that if you’re planning a family picnic or catch up with friends that includes a drink or two in a public place, you check the maps online first or follow any signage in the area. Nobody wants to end up paying $250 just for a couple of beers,” Ms Swinney said.
