Community New Year’s Eve event at Innes Common

19 December 2018

Live entertainment, food trucks and kids’ activities all feature in a community New Year’s Eve event to be held at Hamilton Lake Domain/Innes Common.

The family focussed event is being hosted by Hamilton City Council, with support from UltraFast Fibre and Tompkins Wake, and will run from 5pm to 9.30pm.

The Council’s Community Development Team sought to put together an inclusive family friendly event which gave the wider community a chance to celebrate the New Year in Hamilton.

The event will be alcohol-free and will have an emphasis on embracing the city’s cultural diversity and including people from across the community.

Activities and performers are entirely local, further emphasising local talent available in the Hamilton community. It also presents aspiring performers with a chance to present their talents in front of a local audience.

A pyrotechnics display is also part of the event.

“Although many families head to beaches and lakes over the festive season, that’s not an option for some residents and we wanted to ensure those people could mark the end of 2018 and the start of 2019 with an event all generations could enjoy,” says Fungai Mhlanga, a Senior Community Advisor and co-organiser of the event for the Council who will also be among the performers.

“It’s important everyone gets to reflect on the year passed and celebrate the new one.

“The intention is to inspire Hamiltonians and surrounding towns folk to embrace a hopeful future and understand they are part of an active and jovial city.”

Hamilton Lake Domain/Innes Common has been chosen as the venue as it offers a central location for the event. People planning to attend are urged to walk or ride bikes as parking is limited and traffic control will be in place.
