25 January 2019

Waka ama on Te Awarua-o-Porirua will be a popular part of the Waitangi Day commemorations in Porirua, whether it’s part of the official welcome or for the public to have rides on the water
.

Porirua’s beautiful harbour will again provide the backdrop for this year’s Waitangi Day commemorations in the city.

The 6 February event, in partnership with Ngāti Toa Rangatira and Whitireia Polytechnic, will run from 11am to 4pm on Wi Neera Drive and feature a wide range of activities for all ages and interests.

Visitors can enjoy carving and weaving demonstrations by Ngāti Toa, waka ama rides on the harbour, a 3D construction for tamariki with Capital E’s Bloom, Te Reo flag and puppet making with Rangiwahia Arts Centre, Mission Impossible and Toy Town inflatables, and much more.

Whitireia Polytechnic will also be showcasing its construction courses.

More than 50 food and activity stalls will keep visitors busy and Ardijah will headline the musical acts on the main stage, while activity stalls will keep children and others entertained across the site.

A variety of food trucks including Roti Heaven, Little Goat, Zaaffran (Morocco), Greek Souvlaki and Kickflip Pizza Annie’s Neatsweets, Zelati Gelato & Sorbet will ensure puku are full.

Our zero waste kaupapa means we’ll have recycling stations and resuable coffee cups and bottles for sale and a water tanker will be on site to fill water bottles.

Porirua Mayor Mike Tana says it will be a fun-filled time for all the whānau.

“It is a day of fantastic activities, on and off the water, culture, performances and beautiful kai,” he said.

“We recognise the essence of Te Rā o Waitangi – coming together to acknowledge our cultural diversity and history. Our city gets behind it and makes this event colourful, wonderful and welcoming.

“I invite everyone to hop on a waka and experience Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour like never before.

“I can’t wait, Waitangi Day is one of the highlights of the year for me.”

Porirua has previously hosted up to 30,000 people on the Waitangi Day. With Wi Neera Drive an easy 10 minute walk from Porirua station, those coming by train will be able to enjoy a stroll along the streamside and waterfront.
