Homeowners urged to be cautious about home maintenance offers

Attribute to Detective Senior Sergeant Bridget Doell, Auckland City Police:

Police investigating a series of alleged roof scams are continuing to remind the public to be vigilant about suspicious approaches offering home maintenance work.

Individuals involved in these types of scams approach homeowners by cold calling their homes.

“They often say they are contractors who ‘just happen to be in the area’,” says Detective Senior Sergeant Bridget Doell.

“But the reality is, they are often just out to obtain easy money and will quickly leave after starting work.”

Homeowners can often feel pressured or convinced into handing over money.

“If you find yourself in this situation – do not engage and do not hand over any money,” Detective Senior Sergeant Doell says.

Meanwhile, Police are continuing to appeal for sightings of three British nationals in relation to alleged scams in the Auckland region.

James Anthony Nolan, 26, Tommy Ward, 26, and William Donohue, 25, are still being sought by Police.

The trio are believed to have been in the Wellington region, but are known to move between locations.

“If you have seen these men or are approached by them – contact Police on (09) 302 6557.”
