Gisborne: City needs to conserve water

City needs to conserve water

The city is using over a million litres of water an hour, if the high use continues it will take days to refill our reservoirs.

A total ban is still in place for outdoor water use by households – this means no sprinklers, hoses or washing your car, dog or filling the pool.

Demand for water peaked this morning at 1.2million litres per hour.

The rate had dropped to around 800,000 litres per hour at midday and the supply is keeping up with demand, but at this rate it will take longer than expected to replenish the reservoirs.

If there were an event such as a major fire, an unexpected pipe break or earthquake then we won’t have enough water.

We ask people to please take action now so no further restrictions have to be put in place.

This is only until we get the reservoirs full. We may be able to lift the ban by Monday if people conserve now.
