QSO recipient working to liberate us all from ageism
Eleanor Bodger, Director and Founder of Eldernet and Care Publications was appointed a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order in the 2019 New Year Honours List for her services to seniors and her community.
After working as a nurse, a social worker, a community development worker, and working in the public health system Eleanor saw the need for one place that older people could go to find information about the services they needed. In 1997, Eldernet was founded and as they say the rest is history!
Eleanor’s vision was, and still is, to ensure that older people can have access to the best information available to allow them to make good choices for their future. Eldernet was born out of a frustration with the way information was hard to access and restricted by gatekeepers.
The Eldernet site, with its tagline ‘where good decisions start’, includes a nationwide database directory and comprehensive information about community groups and organisations, home help services, retirement villages, residential care homes, public hospitals and other products and services for seniors.
In 2006 Eldernet completed the purchase of the publication ‘A Question of Care’ the forerunner to ‘Where from Here’. ‘Where from Here’ is now referred to as the ‘Aged Care Bible’ and is used extensively throughout the aged care sector as a reference guide as well as being a source of information for older people who prefer to hold a book in their hands rather than going online. This handbook covers important topics such as emotional wellbeing, elder abuse, assessment processes, funding options, etc., and lists home support services, day programmes, kaumatua groups, retirement villages, and aged care providers.
Eldernet and Care Publication’s information services are available free of charge to ensure older people have access to the information they need.
2017, Eldernet celebrated its 20th year of innovating in
this ever-changing sector all while working towards its
mission to “liberate us all from
