Colourful Holi Festival hits Horowhenua

The most colourful festival on the calendar is coming to Horowhenua.

This year on Saturday 16 March, Levin will celebrate its inaugural Holi Festival with colour fights, cultural performances, fireworks, food, an Indian market and much more.

Also known as the Festival of Colours, Holi Festival is the Hindu spring festival of colour and love, signifying the victory of good over evil and the end of winter. Originally from India, the festival’s vivid energy has made it popular in many countries around the world.

Horowhenua District Council Civic & Community Events Coordinator, Melissa Steedman, said being part of the festival was a great way to have lots of fun with family and friends.

“Holi Festival has something for everyone. Whether you want the action and excitement of experiencing a colour fight or you prefer to browse the markets, sample the food, or take in the cultural performances and fireworks, there’s plenty to enjoy,” she said.

Ms Steedman said the Holi Festival will offer two colour fights, where people smear each other with colour bombs and coloured water.

“Colour fights are the most iconic part of the Holi Festival, and we wanted to create a safe and controlled environment for people to enjoy them,” she said.

“At 4pm there will a daytime colour fight at the Village Green. Later, at 7.45pm, there will be a night-time colour fight under ultraviolet light. To get the best effect, people should wear something white that they don’t mind getting covered in colour,” she said.

From 3:30pm, the Levin Memorial Hall will host cultural performances, music and an Indian market; and food trucks will be available at Gladys Taylor Park from 3:30pm.

A fireworks performance at Gladys Taylor Park at 9pm will round off the evening.

Tickets for the colour fights are $15, which includes three packets of colour, and are available from Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō in Levin, Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom in Foxton, and the Shannon Library. Entry to other Holi Festival attractions is free.
