Emergency services are responding to a serious crash on State Highway 27, north of Matamata, in the Waikato district.

Police were called to the crash at the intersection of State Highway 27 and Kereone Road about 11.35am today.

One person has been critically injured.

The Serious Crash Unit is in attendance.

Part of State Highway 27 is currently closed and diversions are in place.

Diversions are in place at Maungakawa Road for southbound traffic, and at Walton Road for vehicles travelling north.

Motorists are being asked to expect delays, and avoid the area if possible.
