Whangarei Police are pleased that there has been no fatalities on Northland roads over the holiday period.

However, Police are disappointed at a number of motorists stopped at checkpoints across Whangarei on Good Friday.

More than 35 infringement notices were issued by Police at checkpoints across the city.

Several of these infringement notices were issued to speeding drivers.

Six drivers are being charged for drivers with excess breath alcohol, and a number of drivers were issued infringement notices for a range of other traffic offences.

One driver, a 29-year-old man, was stopped at a checkpoint on High Street and processed for excess breath alcohol.

Four children in the vehicle were not wearing seat belts, one of whom was found sitting in the front passenger foot well.

The front passenger was also not wearing a seat belt.

A 22-year-old man was detected driving at excessive speed on Corks Road.

He had his licence suspended for 28 days and was issued with several other infringement notices.

The Police operation also identified a man who had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

He was charged with allegedly giving false details to Police officers at a checkpoint and he appeared in the Whangarei District Court on Saturday.

A 32-year-old male wanted in relation to an assault was located at a checkpoint and was arrested.

A 17-year-old female passenger in a vehicle stopped on Third Avenue was arrested in relation to the possession and supply of cannabis.

Police would like to commend the majority of motorists who drove safely over the weekend.

”We want to keep this up, not just during holiday periods, but every time motorists venture out onto the roads,” says Acting Inspector Rob Huys.

“Our staff are working hard to keep everyone safe on our roads but it can’t be done alone.

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

“Please buckle up, avoid alcohol and drugs, and put away your phones and other distractions.

Mind your speed so we all get to our destinations safely.”
