Public Confidence In Waitemata Police Increases

The Waitematä Police District has released the latest trust and confidence survey results. They show that both public confidence and peoples’ sense of safety in their local communities has markedly increased in the past two years.

Public confidence in Waitematä Police is at 76 per cent. This is up from 72% for the previous two years. The survey also shows a continuing increase in peoples’ sense of safety in their city or town centre after dark, with results in 2011 at 54 per cent, up from just 47 per cent in 2009-10.

The Citizens’ Satisfaction survey research has been conducted by Gravitas Research & Strategy Limited since 2008. It shows public confidence in Police has increased every year nationally from 69 per cent in 2008-09 to 77 per cent in 2010-11. There are almost 10,000 people surveyed annually.

The research is by telephone interview. Almost four in every 10 people are recorded as having had some form of contact with Police in the previous six months. The survey was introduced to provide Police with an independent means of monitoring how the public perceives Police, and the quality of service people received when interacting with Police.

Waitematä Police Commander Superintendent Bill Searle says it is especially pleasing to know that peoples’ overall satisfaction with their Police service experience has increased to 85% in 2011, up from 77% in 2010.

“Improved perceptions of the Police service being value for money, and an improvement in Waitematä Police “keeping promises” are contributing factors to this recorded increase. This is most evident in the doing “what we said we would do” measure, which is at 89 per cent, up from 82 per cent in 2010.”

“These results demonstrate our commitment to making our local communities safer. They are testament to the hard work and professionalism of all police staff in the District. It is vital that when people interact with us they have the kind of experience which is both meaningful and memorable. That will be how they view us for the rest of their life.”

“Waitematä Police will continue to work on a range of initiatives to improve our service delivery and engagement with our community,” Superintendent Bill Searle said.
