More Council sites affected by Maui gas rupture

Hamilton City Council has begun cutting off natural gas supplies to a number of its sites following the Maui pipeline rupture.

Ray Pooley, Council’s property manager, said Genesis Energy had asked Council to shut off gas supply to sites which include Founders Theatre, parts of Hamilton Gardens (including the workshop and nursery), the Meteor Theatre, changing rooms at Council-owned sports grounds and Council’s Duke Street Depot.

The shut-offs began this afternoon, and were for an unknown timeframe, Mr Pooley said.

Waterworld and Claudelands have already been affected by the Maui pipeline leak. Waterworld remains open, but water for both pools and showers can not be heated and is dropping in temperature, and the Municipal Pools would also be temporarily closed.

Mr Pooley said the shut-offs related mainly to the heating of water at Council’s facilities, but also to included some cooking appliances at sites.

“We’re in close contact with Genesis Energy, and we will continue to work with them to do what we is needed,” Mr Pooley said.

Council’s pensioner housing was not affected, but tenants would be asked to minimise their use of gas, he said. The Crematorium at the Newstead Cemetery was also not affected.
