The People vs Joe Karam

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Justice for Robin Bain
October 2011

David Bain: Counter Spin

Media Release from the Justice for Robin Bain Group:

BEGINS

The People vs Joe Karam

Joe Karam has sued members of the Justice for Robin Bain Group for defamation on the basis of things that 18 members of the general public have said on online discussion boards about the Bain case. These 18 people are students, housewives, small business owners, workers, teachers, retirees, everyday people. This is not ACP Media or Fairfax that Karam has sued. These are just everyday NZers.

The matters that these 18 kiwis were discussing, and for which Joe Karam seeks damages, all involve his very public involvement in the Bain case, including his books, his public statements, his legal aid handouts and his propensity for suing people who publicly speak out in opposition to his ideas. We consider that we have every right to discuss these matters because of the high level of public interest in the Bain case and because we live in a democratic society.

Not only is there an issue of how Joe Karam has represented the facts of the Bain case to the public, which is investigated in some detail on the http://davidbain.counterspin.co.nz site, but we also have the issue of freedom of political speech. Our forefathers sacrificed their lives to preserve freedoms like this. Lest we forget.

The Justice for Robin Bain Group which consists of more than 600 members, will continue to defend the lawsuit and if Joe Karam wishes to settle it in court then we see this as an opportunity to publicly clarify certain aspects of the Bain case and Joe Karam’s activities in relation to it. Our endeavour is to resolve the Bain case once and for all so that the deceased members of the Bain family can rest in peace.

In order to achieve this goal requires the services of a legal defamation expert whom we have engaged for our defence. Legal representation does not come cheap and we are asking the public to help with this. We are organizing fund raising events later this year or early next, in Dunedin, Christchurch and Tairua, and people can donate via the counterspin website. Every ten dollars helps. Thank-you.
