Waihi Police seek public's help following serious assault

Waihi Police are seeking the public's assistance in identifying the persons responsible for a serious assault in the town over the weekend that left the victim requiring hospital treatment.

Detective Sergeant Glenn Tinsley of the Waihi CIB said emergency services were called to the scene of the incident, on Tauranga Rd near Coronation Bridge, about 5.30pm on Saturday.

"It appears a group of people attending a memorial near Gilmore Lake have chased a man aged in his twenties from Gilmore St to Tauranga Rd where the assault took place.

"Several motorists are understood to have been forced to take evasive action to avoid those involved in the assault and we would like to speak to those people as we work to establish the identities of all involved."

Mr Tinsley said the victim of the attack suffered moderate head injuries but has since been released from Thames Hospital.

"This type of behaviour is not acceptable and we need the assistance of the community to ensure those responsible are accountable for their actions."

Anyone with any information on the assault is asked to contact Mr Tinsley at the Waihi Police Station on 07 863 8179, alternatively information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
